STAINLESS STEEL BALUSTRADE AT THE COAST

A stainless steel balustrade from Q-railing will perform just as well in challenging coastal conditions as it would inland. The proof? Look no further than the lifeguard stations at Katwijk. Situated on the south-west coast of the Netherlands, this unspoilt seaside town is known for its wide sandy beaches and a laid-back atmosphere. In 2016, 2 modern lifeguard stations were built on its shoreline. Both feature a Q-line stainless steel balustrade with glass clamps.

About the project
The project was initiated as part of a plan to upgrade the seaside resort. There were existing lifeguard stations, but they did not provide adequate views of the beach. The new facilities were built in just 5 months by contractor Van Rhijn Bouw. In addition to the rooms for police personnel and medical equipment, both lifeguard stations include changing rooms and an area for marine and beach education.

The appearance of the 2 buildings is striking. Project architect Architectenbureau Van Manen envisioned them as modern, highly transparent structures. To achieve that effect, light colours, large windows and contrasting shapes were used in the design. At both stations, the observation area is surrounded by a stainless steel balustrade with glass infills, which are held in place by glass clamps.

The contractor, the architect and the project installer – Glass Inside Wateringen – were all keen to use Q-railing’s Q-line system for the stainless steel balustrade. With minimal stainless steel posts, it offers maximum transparency and a stylish look. For this project, the posts were given a special surface finish to help protect the stainless steel from corrosion.

The Q-line system is designed for ease of installation. Installer Glass Inside Wateringen constructed nearly 90 metres of balustrade in total, using Q-railing’s MOD 28 glass clamps to mount the infills. The curved profile of these versatile clamps helps to repel sand and water.
