Ocean House is a retirement development in St Austell, on Cornwall’s Carlyon Bay. Designed by McCarthy & Stone, the development consists of 32 luxury retirement apartments. Each unit required a balcony balustrade that did justice to the panoramic views of Cornwall’s stunning coastline – the adjustable glass balustrade Easy Glass Prime was the perfect answer.

The architectural intent was for the entire front of the building to form a radius. The natural choice was to construct it from steel (100 tons of it), which the client would then build around. Each detail and connection had to be meticulously designed.

An adjustable glass balustrade system for simpler installation
This project presented serious challenges when it came to the installation of glass balustrades. Because the building is curved, all the balconies are curved too. The solution involved fixing stainless steel bolts to the structure. They were left protruding so that the client could waterproof and seal them. Then, individual sections of base shoe between 1m and 1.2m wide were bolted and facetted round the balcony to suit its curvature.

The extreme adjustability of Q-railing’s Easy Glass Prime balustrade system made this task relatively simple. Arranging glass around a curve is much more difficult than placing it in a straight line, so Easy Glass Prime being an adjustable glass balustrade proved invaluable.

The result is a selection of stunning frameless glass balustrades that allow the residents to enjoy wonderful sea views.
