BALUSTRADES WITH HANDRAIL LIGHTING FOR SAFER ACCESS

In 2016-2017, the White Rose Shopping Centre in Leeds received a new access ramp as part of significant expansion and modernisation work. To enhance safety, the operator of White Rose, Landsec, had high-grade posted balustrades from the Q-line series added, together with Q-lights Linear Line LED handrail lighting.

White Rose originally opened its doors in 1997. In 2016, an ambitious renovation programme was set in motion. The new access ramp was added as a priority. Project architects the Harris Partnership saw the opportunity to provide additional lighting, integrated into the ramp’s safety barrier.

Lighted handrails on stainless balustrades

The architect identified Q-line balustrades as a good fit for the project. Their high-grade stainless steel finish and clean rounded design provided the required contemporary look. Q-line also recommended itself because it could be combined easily with lighted handrails. The design created by the Harris Partnership specified a cap rail with Q-lights Linear Light LED strips integrated.

Installation of the preferred solution was carried out by The Wilde Group, using a straightforward process. Having installed the 48.3 mm Q-line posts, with MOD 22 glass clamps to hold the 10 mm thick glass infills, handrail brackets and handrails could then be added. Taking advantage of an ingenious special Q-lights adapter from Q-railing, the installation team mounted cap rails, rather than a standard handrail. For convenience, the cap rails were supplied with built-in LED strip lighting.

Extended leisure

The safety provided by the well-lit access ramp has become ever more important. Already a busy shopping centre with 65,000 of retail square metres over 2 storeys, the site has subsequently been upgraded by Landsec. An 11-screen cinema and several restaurants have increased pedestrian traffic considerably and raised the profile of the site. The ultra-safe and good-looking Q-line balustrades, with their integrated LED lighting, were the perfect choice for a heavy-use public space.
