Siedlce was founded more than six centuries ago on the land between two rivers – Muchawka and Helenka – in Poland’s Mazovia Province. Today, it is a city of more than 70,000 inhabitants. Situated on European route E30, it is an important regional centre for education, culture and business. In March 2014, Galeria Siedlce was added to the city’s skyline. With 120 shops, a food court of 12 restaurants and a 5-screen cinema, Galeria Siedlce is the biggest shopping mall east of Warsaw.
This surprising shopping centre combines traditional design motifs with contemporary materials and features. For example, its impressive façade is constructed from glass but echoes the historic forms of the National Bank of Poland premises just opposite. A 1920’s building has also been cleverly incorporated into the mall’s modern structures, to stunning effect. By contrast, one of the most striking contemporary elements of Galeria Siedlce is a very special glass balustrade for shopping malls that has been used throughout.
About the project
Galeria Siedlce’s 34,000 square metres is spread over 3 floors and accommodates thousands of shoppers on a busy day. Consequently, safety was a key consideration for designers Emkwadrat Architekci. After extensive research, they identified Q-railing’s Easy Glass 3kN as the prefect system for creating ultra-safe glass balustrades for shopping malls. Consisting mainly of glass, it provides excellent transparency and lightness of appearance. But Easy Glass 3kN is also highly robust. In fact, it is able to resist loads of more than 3kN/m. At Galeria Siedlce, 25.76 mm glass infills were used, together with 60.3 mm cap rails. In total, APM Project installed more than 650 metres of railing.
