If there is one place that needs a really secure safety barrier, it is a viewpoint at more than 1,000 metres above sea level! When the spectacular Loen Skylift was constructed between 2015 and 2017, Q-railing’s Easy Glass Max was considered the natural choice for a public area at the top of Mount Hoven. The frameless balustrade system is as tough as they come. It can easily cope with wintery mountain conditions and line loads of more than 5 kN/m. But, just as importantly, its near-invisible structure ensures uninterrupted views.
On 20 May 2017, one of Norway’s most impressive tourist attractions was officially opened amidst the spectacular beauty of the fjords. The Loen Skylift is the world's steepest cable car. It transports you from sea level all the way up to the summit of Mount Hoven in just 5 minutes. That is an ascent of more than 1,000 metres. At the top, visitors are greeted by a mountain station with a restaurant. This incredible place provides a 210-degree panoramic view of Mount Skåla, Lake Lovatnet, the Jostedal Glacier and the Nordfjord.
Construction in such an exposed and inaccessible location presents challenges. But the incredible views from Mount Hoven were crying out for a building that provides both excitement and safety. Oslo-based project architects Eva Eide Koefoed were determined not to compromise on either of those things. Working with a team from local practice Aaland Arkitektkontor, they decided to equip the restaurant’s roof-top deck with a high-quality frameless balustrade. It allows the public to fully enjoy the setting while remaining totally secure.
Q-railing’s Easy Glass Max glass railing system was identified as the most suitable solution. Successfully tested against line loads of up to 5 kN/m, it can easily cope with the high wind speeds that occur at the top of the mountain. And given that Max consists mainly of glass, it is guaranteed to give visitors a stunning ‘fjord experience’. Installer Bolseth Glass mounted 75 metres of the frameless balustrade and topped it with a 60-mm cap rail in stainless steel. Hexagon-head anchors allowed them to make small positioning adjustments in a convenient way, even still during the installation.
