In 2015, a major renovation of the former Narracott Hotel in Woolacombe, England, was announced, with a completion date in 2019. The plan was to create new residential apartments spread over 6 separate buildings, a mix of renovation and new structures. The 55 apartments in this stunning development range in size from 1 to 4 bedrooms and contain many luxury features such as floor-to-ceiling windows with Juliet balconies. Continuing the designer feel, the internal and external areas include stylish stainless steel and glass balustrades.
It was a particular challenge to provide glass balustrade solutions suitable for all the required settings, indoor and outdoor, with various types of substrate and making various loading demands.
Hands-on project support
Q-railing had to specify different combinations of balustrade system and fixing method, not only catering for older-style substrates and approaches to surface levelling but also for modern materials and techniques used in new-build settings. And since the site is only a stone’s throw from the ocean, any materials used outdoors had to be capable of dealing with extremely challenging conditions. The mirror polish range provided the ideal solution.
The clients were also keen to have frameless glass balustrades in a number of areas, with loading requirements ranging from 0.74 kN to 1.5 kN. Q-railing were able to advise on suitable approaches and supply relevant test reports, which made the job much more straightforward.
Various glass railings on the balconies
The project’s different balconies called for a variety of glass balustrades.
Juliet balconies were created with the Easy Glass View balcony railing system. Because they are vertically mounted on the facade, they ensure totally unimpeded views of the ocean.
The protruding balconies feature Easy Glass Smart, which offers quick and intuitive installation. All the installation work could be carried out from the inner side of the balustrade.
Unobtrusive stair railings
Communal areas always make a major contribution to the way an apartment building is perceived by visitors. In the Byron apartments, these areas benefit from stair railings with a chic, minimalist look, created using Q-railing’s adjustable Easy Glass Pro stair railing system. This product made the installation process quick and easy for project installer WM Ironworks. Designed, once again, so that all the work can be carried out from the inner side, it completely removes the need for scaffolding. Moreover, each glass panel in the resulting stair railing can be individually adjusted.
WM Ironworks secured the balustrade directly to the stair structure, mounting Q-railing’s MOD 0748 glass adapters onto a stainless steel stringer. As a finishing touch, and for added safety, the stair railing was given a stainless steel cap rail, while matching wall handrails were also installed in certain locations.
