Lots Road is the setting for a spectacular residential development known as Chelsea Waterfront. It was begun in 2015 with a scheduled completion date of 2019. The project’s centrepiece is the transformation of a historic power station into luxury apartments. Two new glass towers have also been constructed, as well as a group of riverside buildings set among landscaped gardens. Q-railing provided ultra-safe, high-transparency glass balustrades for the balconies and terraces of the apartments.

Chelsea Waterfront is not far from the famous King’s Road, with its trendy shops, restaurants and bars. But, until 2015, the site was occupied by a distinctly unglamourous power station, built in 1904 to power London’s underground trains. This structure has been retained and gradually transformed into a prestigious apartment building. Two new residential towers of , both sheathed in glass, mirror the old brick chimneys. Surrounded by cafés, boutique shops and a health club, the site is now a prestigious city quarter of 706 residential units.

Heritage and modern elements
Designed by renowned architects Farrells, Chelsea Waterfront is one of London’s most desirable residential locations. The apartments have 2 to 4 bedrooms, with sizes ranging from 80 to 341 square metres. Most of them are fitted with a state-of-the-art home-automation system that allows you to control lighting, heating and cooling from a touch screen. All have either a garden, a balcony or a terrace. The designs are luxurious, with traditional wood floors and grand windows. To ensure that residents receive maximum benefit from these extravagantly large glazed areas, the external safety barriers on balconies and terraces are mainly glass too. Naturally, the specification for the glass balustrades required very high safety levels as well as maximum transparency.

The Farrells architectural team set out to find a truly exceptional balustrade solution capable of meeting the project’s diverse and demanding requirements. They recognised that Q-railing’s Easy Glass glass balustrades provided both the robustness, transparency and flexibility required. In particular, Easy Glass Slim offered the possibility of creating railings right at the edge of steel balconies. However, safety barriers were created in a variety of different settings throughout the site, always with the same strength and elegant minimalism. That included the roof terraces of the penthouse apartments, where privacy screens were required. They were constructed using the Easy Glass Max system and 25.52 mm frosted glass infills.

Q-railing also provided an attractive safety barrier for a walkway that stretches along Chelsea Creek – an estuary of the River Thames. The cable infills and associated tensioners were selected for their striking industrial look, but the end result was also ultra-strong.

Smooth installation
Chelsea Waterfront was an enormous project that involved numerous collaborating companies and required large quantities of each product. A total of 3,200 metres of glass balustrade were supplied, plus 5,500 metres of glass infill. This was installed by Balco, Trinity Steel and Ardmore. Easy Glass products are designed for quick and easy installation, so both the glass balustrades and the cable infills were mounted in a highly cost-efficient and convenient way.
