After successful launches in Russia, France and Spain, IKEA opened Germany’s first “IKEA Shopping Centre” in March 2015. The shopping centre concept combines a standard IKEA store with a variety of other shops. All together, the centre in Lübeck houses more than 50 different shops spread out over 60,000 square metres, offering furniture, interior accessories, clothing, shoes, toys, books, tools and even groceries.
About the project
To match the open feel of the shopping centre and underline the accessibility of the company, both IKEA and the architect insisted on having glass balustrades for the stairs and for the exterior and interior balconies. Lehnsan Metallbau, the installer for the project, recommended Q-railing’s Easy Glass® Slim for the interior, and Easy Glass® 3kN for the exterior. To achieve a rounded look, they mounted the base shoes in segments.
Special attention was paid to the balustrade for the IKEA restaurant area. Because IKEA has extra-high safety standards for areas where children could be running, jumping or climbing, the company uses 1.60 m high balustrades in its restaurants instead of the “normal” 1.10 m. This type of product requires special certification. Q-railing supported the installer through the whole process and supplied the products required.
