The Asian restaurant on the Tingvalla pier at Aker Brygge, Oslo, was built in 2011, following an international architectural competition. Danish architects MAPT were the winners, with a distinctive contemporary design that is also highly sustainable. It strongly reflects the coastal setting as well as the Norwegian tradition of building in wood. For the elegant glass balcony, the architects opted to use Q-railing’s Easy Glass Slim balustrade.
The Asian restaurant is the first part of a project to modernise and restructure Oslo’s waterfront district of Aker Brygge. Appropriately, the building’s form is reminiscent of a wave. It also has a glass wall that runs the full width of the restaurant, giving diners a great view of the marina and the vast fjord beyond. This continuous belt of transparency at ground floor level creates a strong sense of connection with the promenade just outside. As a striking contrast with the glass wall, the building’s facade also has an environmentally-friendly wooden cladding, provided by Kebony. This reflects similar facades in the immediate area.
Key structural elements of the interior have been turned into exciting architectural features – notably an ash wood staircase and the restaurant’s mezzanine. This latter feature was equipped with a glass balustrade that shares the high-transparency look of the ground floor glass wall. This impressive glass balcony lets guests soak up the beautiful coastal setting while enjoying a gourmet meal.
For the mezzanine and the feature staircase, the project architect, MAPT, opted for an ultra-slender Q-railing balustrade. After reviewing the requirements, Q-railing recommended its Easy Glass Slim glass balustrade. This highly affordable system allowed for near-total transparency while offering ultimate safety. The architect agreed that it represented an excellent solution to the challenge of creating a glass balcony with coordinating stairs. They also requested that Q-railing supply elegant Q-line wall handrails to complete the staircase.
In total, the project installer mounted 50 metres of railing on the mezzanine and staircase.
